Best Gifts For New Mums

After all that hard work, you’ll want to get her something she’ll use and love. It’s hard enough for a new mum to know what to buy her newborn lets face it, so take the hard work away from her with this handy guide.

(As a gentle hint, she doesn’t care about the perfect gift, mum gift cards, jewellery or clothes right now. Chocolates are welcome though.)

If you’re still with me, here’s a handy list of things she’d love and use, based on my experiences as a new mum.

The Best Gifts For New Mums

My Expert Midwife Soak for Bits

This bath soak makes a great new mum gift and is heavenly in the early days after giving birth, to sooth sore bits and help relax areas of tension post labour. In fact, this could be the best present here!

The Epsom Salts promote healing, and the smell of the essential oils transports her to a spa centre. I was in relaxation heaven when I soaked in this, bathing in my glory after the hard work of giving birth.

Personally, I had the bathwater as hot as I could stand, and bathed for a good half an hour at a time (every night in the first week or so!) I’m convinced this is bad advice mind you, but it worked for me. It also helped to get a good night’s sleep as an added bonus.

It’s 100% natural, which is appropriate for the ‘down there’ bits. Just an FYI. All in all, a welcome gift for the special lady.

Lansinoh Nipple Cream (A big tube of it)

If the new mum is breastfeeding, this nipple balm is the best of the bunch (I’ve tried literally all of them) Long days sat on the sofa feeding can take its toll on our nipples (sorry if TMI)

Smoothing this stuff on before and after a feed helps heal any cracks and make feeding that much easier.

You could add this to a homemade hamper perhaps if you’d like the gift to be more substantial? Pop in a nice lip balm, adorable onesies, face mask, and a soft toy for baby in a pretty gift box and you’re done.

My brilliant Dad sent me this hamper when I was in the last few weeks of pregnancy, and I saved it until after the birth as a mini prize to myself for delivering our beautiful baby. I also highly advocate this as a gift for a new mum.

Sacred Motherhood.

This is such a stunning book! Full of gorgeous images and words, it gets her head into a space of gratitude and wonder about being a mother.

It’s a constant companion on any new mum’s bookshelf, to be treasured for years to come. This is the best new mum gift to give if you’re her best friend, to keep her feeling positive during all those sleepless nights.

(There’s also a Sacred Pregnancy version written by the same author, which is equally wonderful.)

First Time Parent.

This was another baby book constantly being opened! Great for all new parents. It’s getting a bit old now, but the information is still valid and best of all, reassuring.

My favourite takeaway from this book is that “something must work eventually”. That became my motto and got me through many dirty diapers in the middle of the night.

Everything seems to terrify the new mum in the early days (hello anxiety), and this book sorts queries or concerns faster than Google.

It includes information on baby sleep, feeding, clothing, burping, how to change a nappy, and much more.

Hottea Wonder Tea.

In the early days after the birth it’s important to have the kettle on constantly. If you’re thinking of a thoughtful and warming gift, look no further. Couple it with some chunky coffee mugs for best results.

This tea is a miracle cure! It cleans tears faster than a tissue, if you ask me (mum’s tears that is). And it tastes lovely too.

MYing Scented Candles

Lighting a candle brings calm and presence, which is very much needed in the early days of motherhood. I made a little ritual for myself out of these beauties, which add a sense of style to the home.

Bulk these up with some sweet treats and you’ll have one very delighted new mama. These also come in different colours and patterns to suit her style.

Aromatherapy Shower Steamers

The new mum will need help waking up in the morning after spending most of the night with her little newborn. These shower steamers wake you up better than coffee! Shame they only come in packs of 6 but you could alwys get here two…

Teach her to Journal

Journaling is something every mum should do! It’ll help her get around the concept of being a mum, as it can come as a shock.

The weight on her mind can be heavy. Learning how to journal for her wellbeing is a fantastic gift to help lift her mood and spend much needed time with herself.

Burt’s Bees Belly Butter

Another beauty brought by my Dad, this sooths the tummy skin and smells divine. The pot lasts ages too. I’ve had it going for the last 9 months of Maternity Leave and there’s still some left!

I don’t think it’s intention is to smooth stretch marks, but it has helped soften my skin and it’s the only thing I’ve been using, so it works in that sense.

Footprints of baby (remind her to do this!)

One of the best things to do as a new mum is make footprints and handprints of your newborn. It’s a wonderful keepsake and will be treasured in the years to come.

The newborn phase flies so quickly. This was a favourite way to remember the special times we had with both of our babies. One of the cutest things to do during the first months of having a newborn baby.

The Little Book Of Self Care

The list wouldn’t be complete without this heart healer of a book. New mums need help caring for themselves, otherwise all her attention goes on baby and she has no room for herself.

It really does make a gorgeous gift and supports her emotional health too.

This book will give her the nudges she needs to ‘take that bath’ and ‘have that nap’ without the guilt trip. Do her favour and buy this!

I hope this list inspires you to buy thoughtful gifts for the new mum, things she’ll actually value, rather than something stuffed in a wardrobe and forgotten about.

And don’t forget to take round a hot cooked meal and a book so you can watch the baby and let her have some sleep.

I’m not joking!
